The Peter chair and table were created by Hans J. Wegner during World War II. Quality products were not easy to find in wartime Europe, so when Wegner needed a suitable christening gift for Peter, the son of his friend and fellow furniture designer Børge Mogensen, he took matters into his own hands and made it himself.
Wegner, an accomplished cabinetmaker, conceived and built a simple but ingenious chair that would serve as both a functional piece of furniture and an attractive toy. Designed as a life-size, three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle in untreated beech wood, the chair and table are easily assembled without tools, much to the enthusiasm of children and adults alike.
The Peter Chair is a perfect match for the Peter Table. Together, these pieces of furniture reveal the extent of Wegner's innovative spirit, as well as its superior ability to satisfy the natural interest of children without compromising design or quality.
