The PH 3½-2½ Floor Lamp by Louis Poulsen forms part of the family of luminaires based on the three-shade system that Poul Henningsen developed in 1925–1926 with a very clear objective: to create direct, glare-free light where it is most needed, with soft shadows and a comfortable atmosphere.
Rather than designing an isolated lamp, Henningsen created a complete system, which over the years has given rise to a huge variety of models in different sizes, colours and types, including table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and chandeliers, as well as outdoor versions.
The system is based on an almost scientific approach to light and the use of the lituus curve, which allows for uniform distribution across the shade. The three shades work together to control glare and reduce shadows, as each one diminishes the amount of light in a balanced manner according to its distance from the light source.
The early models used metal shades with white, gold or silver interiors to modulate the character of the light, and later glass was incorporated, which, in addition to directing the light downwards, helps to illuminate the rest of the room with a more diffuse reflection.
The nomenclature of the PH models refers to the size of the top shade and the combination of the middle and bottom shades.
In the case of the PH 3½-2½ Foot, this is a ‘hybrid’ model, with an upper shade of approximately 35 cm and corresponding lower shades, created to meet the desire to hang the lamps at a lower height whilst maintaining the system’s lighting quality. The version as we know it today was introduced in 2002.
