Barceloneta

Designed in 1953 by Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá for Santa & Cole, the Barceloneta chair is one of the finest examples of Mediterranean Rationalism from the 1950s.

Commissioned by the architect José Antonio Coderch to furnish the iconic Casa de la Marina in the Barceloneta neighbourhood, this piece combines simplicity, humanity and a deep maritime spirit. Its name pays an affectionate tribute to Barcelona’s fishing neighbourhood, whilst also offering an ironic nod to Mies van der Rohe’s famous Barcelona chair.

Designed as a lightweight and easily transportable deckchair, it stands out for its characteristic steeply raked backrest, designed to invite relaxation and comfortably cradle the head. The low seat height and the absence of armrests mean that a book or a drink placed on the floor is always within easy reach.

Its beechwood frame forms a beautiful triangular interlocking structure that cleanly joins the rear leg, backrest and seat, whilst its canvas backrest is tensioned at the back using a rope with sailor’s eyelets, and is fully removable and washable.

Key features:

  • An iconic rationalist-style chair/lounger created by Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá in 1953 for Santa & Cole.
  • A triangular frame made of natural-coloured varnished beech wood, offering both lightness and sturdiness.
  • Backrest in durable white cotton canvas, removable, washable and tensioned using a textile cord and metal eyelets.
  • Fixed seat upholstered in soft-textured split leather.
  • Dimensions: 55.3 cm wide x 70.6 cm deep x 88.8 cm total height (seat height: 34 cm).
  • Weighs just 5 kg, making it easy to move from room to room.
  • Designed exclusively for indoor use (IP20).
