Case Study Houses

The Case Study House programme (1945–1966) was a milestone in the history of American architecture and a direct response to the post-war housing boom.

Spearheaded by the magazine Arts & Architecture, its aim was to introduce the average citizen to prototypes of modern homes that were affordable and easy to build, demonstrating that the avant-garde could be put at the service of everyday life.

Developed mainly in the Los Angeles area, the programme brought together 36 prototypes commissioned from some of the most influential architects of the time, such as Richard Neutra, Raphael Soriano, Craig Ellwood, Charles and Ray Eames, Pierre Koenig, Eero Saarinen, A. Quincy Jones and Ralph Rapson. Among its principles was the use, wherever possible, of techniques and materials developed during the war and adapted to a modern way of life. The result redefined the concept of contemporary housing and influenced residential architecture far beyond the United States.

This compact guide from TASCHEN brings together all the Case Study House projects, illustrated with over 150 photographs and plans, and includes a map showing their locations, including those that no longer exist.

Key features:

  • Cover: Hardback.
  • Pages: 96.
