ATLAS STOOL

Atlas by John Astbury for New Works is a series of architectural tables and seating.

The solid legs of Atlas, which takes its name from the mythical Titan condemned to hold the sky on his shoulders, stand strong as a support for the table.

The encounter and contrast between the legs and the tabletop is central to the design, where each element exaggerates the other giving the table its distinctive presence and brutalist feel. 

For Atlas, John Astbury has drawn on a number of influences from architectural history. There are references to porticoes and colonnades, but Atlas relies primarily on the archetypal post and lintel construction. Combined with the simple geometry, the circle and the square, it is the primary archetypes that together create the character and composition of the table.
