The PH 5 by Louis Poulsen, designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958, is a pendant lamp created to provide downward-directed, glare-free light, whilst simultaneously illuminating its own structure to create a warm, radiant appearance.

Henningsen conceived it in response to the constant changes in the shape and size of incandescent bulbs of the time, seeking a luminaire capable of adapting to different light sources whilst always maintaining pleasant lighting. This versatility and its lighting quality made the PH 5 an icon, to the point of embodying the so-called ‘PH light’ that continues to enhance contemporary interiors.

Its almost scientific approach to lighting is based on the three-shade system that Henningsen developed in 1925 to control light and reduce glare. Using the lituus curve as its foundation, the multi-shade system achieves uniform distribution, minimises shadows and creates a comfortable atmosphere.
