Swedish publisher Bonnier realized that most homes were not properly furnished, paying attention to bookshelves, which made it very difficult for them to sell books.
In 1949 they announced a contest asking for a design for a shelf with some criteria. The rack had to be affordable, easy to ship, and equally as easy to assemble.
String naturally became a very common solution in Swedish homes during the 1950s and 1960s.
For several years, String production was non-existent.
It was not until 2004 that the brand was revived with a new concept adapted to today's needs.
Nisse Strinning contributed to the rebirth of its own brand with a new design called String Pocket that became an immediate hit and remains one of the brand's flagship products today.
